Anthropic wants your government IDs! (sort of, there is a lot of misinformation going around)
I saw this pop up a lot over the last few days. In Anthropic's privacy page, they reserve the right to request identity verification, depending on what you are asking Claude to do.
People assumed this was because of the Fable ban. Anthropic has actually had this in their privacy page for over 2 months.
This policy update does not apply to Claude Team or Enterprise plans, which are covered by Anthropic’s Commercial Terms.
Anthropic decided to use Persona to do identity verification. This also caused a lot of discussion, because Persona is backed by Peter Thiel’s venture capital fund Founders Fund (make of that what you will).
Because of this vendor decision, people are canceling their Claude subscription, with some people going over to ChatGPT. I do want to point out that OpenAI also uses Persona. In-fact, OpenAI has a whole case study page dedicated to them on Persona’s website.
Regardless of how you feel about the personal identification hoopla, I would heavily encourage you to experiment with open source alternatives. Open source models are closing significant ground, and there is a lot of excitement around Z.ai’s GLM 5.2.
Wherever you end up, just don’t tie yourself to a single vendor.
